Softeners

Softeners

ProMinent® water softeners are devices that remove calcium and magnesium ions which cause the hardness of water, in such a way that they exchange them for sodium ions that do not cause hardness.

The mains water we use mainly originates from rain water which is known to be originally soft. Passing through superficial rock layers, fallen rain dissolves metallic salts (calcium and magnesium salts). Water containing such metallic salts is called hard water.

Definition of water hardness

According to definition, water hardness is a kind of data characterising the salts dissolved in water (calcium and magnesium carbonate).
°dH: German hardness: 1 °dH=17.85 mg/l calcium carbonate (CaCO3) or 1 °dH=10 mg/l calcium oxide (CaO).

Why do we need soft water?

Solute salts settle out from water inside different household appliances, pipes, and give rise to scaling. Boilers and water heaters fur up. Their service life shortens, their effectiveness falls off, but the same happens to washing machines, coffee machines, dish washers and other household devices. Damage can be caused to ceramic disk faucets that are very sensitive to scale and other contaminations. Thick scale layer can be formed on the walls of pipes, which can lead to corrosion or even replacement.

The solution is a ProMinent® water softener.

It protects appliances against damage caused by scale, reduces their maintenance and operating costs. Dishes, glasses dry without water drops, washed clothes will be softer and silkier, and less detergent is needed for washing. Those who have sensitive skin will not have any irritating itching feeling after taking a bath.

The process of water softening

Our water softeners operate on the basis of the so called ion exchange process. Hard water flows through high quality cation-exchange resin which is filled in a plastic pressure vessel. The resin extracts calcium and magnesium ions from raw water and exchanges them for sodium ions.
The ion exchanger resin loses its water softening capacity after a certain water flow. The water softener regenerates exhausted resin with the help of an automatic control valve, using NaCl solution.
