Cooling Water Treatment

Cooling Water Treatment

Cooling towers for circuits of cooling water are used in a range of industries throughout the world. In cases where it is impossible to use fresh water for cooling, circuits for cooling water are used. Cooling water consumption must be minimised and the entire system must be protected from corrosion, sediment and the growth of biological organisms by cooling water treatment. Prevention of negative environmental effects and the formation of legionella are prime concerns.

In circulatory cooling systems, losses of cooling water occur through evaporation and leakage. To compensate for the resulting increase in salt concentration, blowdown takes place, initiated by measurement of electrolytic conductivity. This avoids scaling and corrosion. The additional cooling water also undergoes a chemical treatment.

Requirements for cooling towers

Two main requirements are given to operate cooling towers as efficiently as possible:

  • Reduction of cooling water consumption
  • Protection of entire plant against corrosion, sediments and biologic growth

These two requirements are, however, contradictory. Fresh water consumption in the cooling tower can be avoided by increasing the thixotropy in the circuit water with a desalination control device. However, the number of water contents increases so that the components of the cooling tower, the chiller and the tubings are strongly affected.
